Have you ever responded to something someone has said with the words, “Oh I doubt that. I don’t think it can be true.” On July 3rd we remember one of the Apostles who made such a statement when he was told that the crucified Jesus had appeared to other disciples. His name was Thomas.

Thomas was an honest, forthright, questioning sort of person. The sort of person who would make a good scientist today in the search for a vaccine to protect all people from COVID19. Thomas clearly identified what the markers would be for him to fully believe what the other disciples were saying to him about Jesus’ resurrection appearance. A week later Jesus again appeared to the gathered group of disciples and Thomas’ markers were fulfilled. In thanksgiving and awe Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God”. Here is a prayer for St. Thomas’ Day from Saints Galore by David L. Veal.

O Eternal God, who did strengthen your apostle Thomas, being doubtful, with firm and certain faith in the resurrection of your Son our Lord: Grant us, your people, that we may be not faithless but believing, until we come to see our Saviour in his glory face to face; through the same Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
